Of all the different types of radiation that are emitted from stars and
galaxies, only radio waves and visible light manage to penetrate our
Earth's atmosphere unimpeded. To observe other forms of radiation
(gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet or infrared rays), special satellites,
or observatories built on very high, dry mountains must be used.
